Guttering:What You Need to Know

What it is

Guttering collects rainwater from the roof and carries it to downpipes and drains. We fit new guttering to replace systems that are cracked, sagging, leaking at the joints or simply too old to be worth repairing.

Who it's for

This service is for homeowners with gutters that overflow, drip at the joints or have pulled away from the fascia, and for anyone replacing their roofline or roof who wants new gutters at the same time.

When you need it

Signs you need new guttering include water spilling over the edge in heavy rain, damp patches or green staining on walls, dripping joints, sagging runs and brackets that have come loose.

Why it matters who does it

Gutters need the right fall to carry water to the downpipes, and secure brackets to stay in place. Getting the fall and fixings right is what stops overflows and keeps water away from the house.

The cost of waiting

What HappensIf It's Left

Faulty guttering quietly sends large amounts of water onto your walls and around your foundations every time it rains.

Damp walls

Overflowing water soaks brickwork, which can lead to damp patches inside the house.

Fascia rot

Leaking gutters wet the boards behind them, speeding up rot in timber fascias.

Ground and foundation issues

Water dumped at the base of walls instead of into drains can cause problems around the foundations.

Staining and moss

Constant wetting leaves green staining and moss on walls and paths.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Fitting new gutters to rotten fascia boards.
  • Getting the fall wrong, so water pools instead of flowing to the downpipe.
  • Repeatedly resealing joints on a system that has reached the end of its life.
  • Ignoring an overflow because it only happens in heavy rain.

How We PriceGuttering

Every guttering job starts with a free survey. We come to the property, look at the problem properly and talk you through what we've found. You don't pay anything for the visit and there's no obligation to go ahead.

After the visit we send you a fixed-price quote, usually within a day. We don't work on an hourly rate, so the figure on the quote is the figure you pay; the job taking a little longer than expected doesn't change your bill. Deposits are only required on larger jobs, and no deposit is needed for repairs.

Because every property is different, we don't publish set prices online. A fixed price based on your actual roof is fairer and more accurate than a guess based on averages.

Six Questions to AskAny Roofer

Whoever you choose for your guttering, these questions will help you compare quotes fairly and avoid unpleasant surprises.

  1. 1

    Is the price fixed?

An hourly rate or a vague estimate can grow as the job goes on. Ask for a fixed total in writing before any work begins. Every Redland quote is a fixed price.

  2. 2

    What exactly is included?

Two quotes can look very different once you compare what's actually being done. Ask for the work to be described clearly so you're comparing like with like.

  3. 3

What's the guarantee, and is it in writing?

A guarantee period should be stated, not implied. Ours are 25 years on new pitched roofs and 15 years on flat roofs, with repair guarantees confirmed on site.

  4. 4

    Are you insured?

Roofing is work at height. Make sure whoever you hire is insured. We are fully insured.

  5. 5

    Can I read independent reviews?

Reviews on independent platforms are harder to fake than testimonials on a website. You can read ours on Google and Checkatrade.

  6. 6

How soon will I get the quote?

A slow quote is often a sign of slow work. We aim to send your quote within a day of the visit.

In detail

GutteringExplained

A guttering job is more than just the gutter itself. Here's what's involved.

Gutters and fall

Gutters must slope gently towards the outlets. We set the fall so water flows away instead of collecting and overflowing.

Brackets and fixings

Secure brackets at the right spacing stop gutters sagging under the weight of water and debris.

Downpipes and outlets

Outlets and downpipes carry water to the drains. We fit them so they connect cleanly to the gutter run.

Fascias behind the gutter

If the fascia boards are rotten, new gutters won't stay put. We check them and can replace them in uPVC at the same time.

Houses, extensions and garages

We fit guttering to main houses as well as extensions, garages and outbuildings.

Keeping gutters working

Even well-fitted gutters can block with leaves, moss and debris, especially near trees. Blocked gutters overflow just like broken ones. Keeping an eye on them after autumn helps you spot problems before they cause damp.

Joints and seals

Leaking joints are one of the most common guttering problems on older systems. Once seals have perished across a whole run, replacing the guttering is usually more reliable than resealing joint after joint.

Downpipe positions

If water regularly overflows at one end of a run, the gutter may need a different fall or an extra outlet. We'll look at how water is actually flowing during the survey and recommend the right layout.

Flat roofs and guttering

Many flat roofs on garages and extensions drain into a gutter along one edge. If that gutter fails, water runs back onto the walls or the roof edge. We check these as part of flat roof work too.
