uPVC Fascias & Soffits:What You Need to Know

What it is

Fascias are the boards along the bottom edge of the roof that carry the guttering. Soffits sit underneath, closing the gap between the fascia and the wall. Replacing them in uPVC gives a neat finish that doesn't need painting and won't rot.

Who it's for

This service suits homeowners with flaking, rotting or damaged timber fascias and soffits, anyone whose guttering is pulling away because the boards behind have failed, and anyone looking to tidy up the outside of their home.

When you need it

Look for peeling paint, soft or crumbling timber, gaps where birds or pests can get in, sagging gutters and staining beneath the roofline. These are signs the boards are no longer doing their job.

Why it matters who does it

Fascias support your guttering and help protect the roof edge. Fitting them properly means checking what's behind them, not just covering up the problem. One customer review says: 'Very pleased with the new guttering, fascias and soffits. Super friendly and polite. Quoted on Saturday and fitted in on Monday.'

The cost of waiting

What HappensIf It's Left

Failing roofline boards affect more than appearance. They support your guttering and protect the edge of the roof.

Sagging and leaking gutters

Rotten fascias can't hold gutter brackets securely, so gutters sag, leak and overflow.

Water damage to walls

Overflowing gutters soak brickwork and can lead to damp inside.

Pests and birds

Gaps in soffits give birds and pests a way into the roof space.

Ongoing maintenance

Timber boards need regular painting. Left too long, they rot and need replacing anyway.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Covering rotten timber with uPVC capping without checking what's underneath.
  • Replacing fascias but reusing tired guttering that will need replacing soon after.
  • Repainting boards that are already soft and failing.
  • Ignoring the roof edge tiles and felt while the roofline is open.

How We PriceuPVC Fascias & Soffits

Every upvc fascias & soffits job starts with a free survey. We come to the property, look at the problem properly and talk you through what we've found. You don't pay anything for the visit and there's no obligation to go ahead.

After the visit we send you a fixed-price quote, usually within a day. We don't work on an hourly rate, so the figure on the quote is the figure you pay; the job taking a little longer than expected doesn't change your bill. Deposits are only required on larger jobs, and no deposit is needed for repairs.

Because every property is different, we don't publish set prices online. A fixed price based on your actual roof is fairer and more accurate than a guess based on averages.

Six Questions to AskAny Roofer

Whoever you choose for your upvc fascias & soffits, these questions will help you compare quotes fairly and avoid unpleasant surprises.

  1. 1

    Is the price fixed?

An hourly rate or a vague estimate can grow as the job goes on. Ask for a fixed total in writing before any work begins. Every Redland quote is a fixed price.

  2. 2

    What exactly is included?

Two quotes can look very different once you compare what's actually being done. Ask for the work to be described clearly so you're comparing like with like.

  3. 3

What's the guarantee, and is it in writing?

A guarantee period should be stated, not implied. Ours are 25 years on new pitched roofs and 15 years on flat roofs, with repair guarantees confirmed on site.

  4. 4

    Are you insured?

Roofing is work at height. Make sure whoever you hire is insured. We are fully insured.

  5. 5

    Can I read independent reviews?

Reviews on independent platforms are harder to fake than testimonials on a website. You can read ours on Google and Checkatrade.

  6. 6

How soon will I get the quote?

A slow quote is often a sign of slow work. We aim to send your quote within a day of the visit.

In detail

uPVC Fascias & SoffitsExplained

Roofline replacement involves a few key components. Here's what's included and the options you'll have.

Fascia boards

Fascias carry the gutters and close off the ends of the rafters. Replacing them in uPVC provides a solid, durable fixing for new guttering.

Soffits

Soffits close the underside of the roof overhang. They help keep birds and pests out and give the roofline a finished look.

Bargeboards and gable ends

On gable ends, the boards that follow the slope of the roof can also be replaced to match the rest of the roofline.

Guttering at the same time

Because gutters are fixed to the fascias, it often makes sense to replace both together. See our guttering page for details.

Alongside a new roof

If you're having a new roof, replacing the roofline at the same time makes the most of access already in place.

Checking the roof edge

With the old fascias removed, the bottom row of tiles and the edge of the underlay become visible. This is a good time to check that the roof edge is sound and that water drains properly into the gutter rather than behind it.

Ventilation

Roof spaces need airflow to stay dry and avoid condensation. Soffits play a part in this on many homes. We'll look at how your roof space is ventilated during the survey so the new roofline doesn't create a problem.

A neat, uniform finish

Replacing the whole roofline at once (fascias, soffits, bargeboards and guttering) gives a consistent finish around the house, rather than a mix of old and new.
